We are the National Quantum Computing Centre are ready to welcome two summer placement students to undertake a short (8-12) week research project within the NQCC Superconducting Circuits team!
This is a great opportunity to learn the theory surrounding superconducting circuits, gain research experience, and present your work to others at the NQCC.
You will perform simulations or experiments relating to superconducting qubits, analyse the resulting data, and produce presentations and a written report of the findings. You may also have the opportunity to help the team within the lab for some simple tasks – depending on your lab experience.
You will get to participate in group meetings with the Superconducting Circuits team and wider NQCC activities such as Journal Club – and Cake Club!

About the role
Within this placement, responsibilities will include:
- Learn about and understand the concepts underlying Quantum computing and superconducting qubits.
- Apply knowledge of superconducting qubits and quantum computing gained to theoretical or experimental problems within superconducting circuits.
- Take part in internal NQCC group activities such as group meetings and discussions surrounding your project.
- Disseminate information learnt to internal teams through group meetings, internal discussions, and final presentations.
To apply for this placement, we are looking for the following:
Essential criteria:
- Are in full-time education at university, and will be returning to university/your studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement
- Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
- Currently studying an undergraduate physics, theoretical physics, mathematical physics, computer science, or related degree
- Knowledge of programming languages and techniques
- Knowledge of quantum mechanics to undergraduate level
- Knowledge of data analysis techniques
- Good communication skills
- Good organizational and problem-solving skills
- Basic research skills i.e., use of journals
Desirable criteria:
- Experience of programming in languages such as Python, Matlab, Labview etc
- Knowledge/awareness of Quantum Computing or Superconducting Circuits
- Research experience as part of a larger project
- Knowledge of STFC/NQCC
