UK government announces £670 m for quantum computing

In the Industrial Strategy published today, the UK government has announced a £670 m investment to accelerate the impact of quantum computing, including a 10-year funding settlement for the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC).

Today’s announcement is a landmark moment for the UK’s quantum ecosystem. The investment will enable longer-term planning, growth, and national capability-building. It is dedicated to realising quantum’s transformative potential as the UK continues to position itself as a global leader.

The NQCC is among the first organisations to receive a 10-year funding settlement, providing certainty for researchers and the business community with which we engage.

Dr Michael Cuthbert, Director of the NQCC, shared:
“In this International Year of Quantum, today’s announcement is an enormous boost for the UK quantum computing industry… It is a powerful signal of government ambition to make the UK a key international player.”

By 2035, the UK aims to develop quantum computers capable of outperforming conventional supercomputers, with the potential to unlock a range of applications, from the discovery of new medicines to new solutions for clean energy. At the NQCC, we will continue to work across government, industry, and the research community to enable the full realisation of quantum computing’s potential.
