The National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) is a new research institution, representing a £93 million investment through UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), to be jointly delivered by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).
The NQCC is dedicated to accelerating the development of quantum computing by addressing the challenges of scaling the emerging technologies, enabling the UK to remain at the forefront of this transformative new field. The national centre is part of the UK’s National Quantum Technologies Programme (NQTP) – a ten-year, £1 billion programme that aims to ensure the successful transition of quantum technologies from laboratory to industry.
The centre will be headquartered in a purpose-built facility on STFC’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory site at the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire, which is due for completion in 2023.
The Quantum computing industry in the UK was given a boost in 2020 by the launch of the NQCC in September 2020. The breaking-ground ceremony for the NQCC’s facility represents a key milestone in the delivery of the programme one year on.
Event highlights –
- The breaking-ground ceremony was held on Monday, 20th September 2021 at 11:45 to celebrate the milestone ahead of the commencement of the NQCC’s new facility construction
- Sir Peter Knight broke the ground for the NQCC’s facility. Sir Peter is Emeritus Professor at Imperial, a past President of the Institute of Physics and the Optical Society of America, Chairs the National Quantum Technology Programme Strategy Advisory Board and the Quantum Metrology Institute at the National Physical Laboratory
- The ceremony was followed by a networking lunch with the representatives from the Government, Research and Academia, Industries and End-users
- The attendance was by invitation only, to maintain a safe number of people on the site.
